Rhinoplasty (Surgery
of the Nose)
Rhinoplasty is the surgical repair of a defect of the nose, including
reshaping or resizing the nose. Rhinoplasty may be performed to change
the size of the nose, change the shape of the nose, narrow the nostrils,
and/or change the angle between the nose and lips. Rhinoplasty involves
the resculpting of the bone and cartilage.
Assuming you are in good health, there is no upper age limit for having
your nose reshaped. Rhinoplasty is sometimes performed in conjunction
with a facelift or other rejuvenate surgery to correct aging changes
of the nose such as a drooping tip. Sometimes certain breathing problems
related to the internal nasal structures can be corrected at the same
time as nose reshaping is performed. A plastic surgeon will be able
to help determine whether these structures should be modified along
with reshaping the nose.
Rhytidectomy (Surgery
of the Face)
Also called facelift, rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure that involves
the removal of excess facial fat, the tightening of facial muscles,
and the stretching of facial skin (to approximate a smoother and/or
firmer appearance). The procedure takes place on either the face,
neck, or both.
Most facelift
incisions are placed within the hairline and within natural contours
in front of and behind the ear. Sometimes the deeper tissues may also
need to be repositioned in order to restore a more youthful contour
to the face. After the skin has been pulled up and back, the excess
is removed. A plastic surgeon may be able to restore a firmer, fresher
look to the face through the discreet facelift incisions. The plastic
surgeon is able to free the skin from the underlying tissues to the
extent necessary for the particular surgical technique selected, and
after the skin has been pulled up and back, the excess is removed.
In some instances, the deeper tissues may also need to be repositioned
in order to restore a more youthful facial contour. If necessary,
a small incision beneath the chin permits the removal of fatty tissue
in that area and smoothing of the cord-like structures of the underlying
muscle in the neck.
